Summary: If you are (a) really stuck financially, and (b) open to new insights, particularly about the relationship between Spirit and Supply, this book is for you. Another reviewer noted, "Don't be fooled by its small size." Indeed...At the book's core is the 40 Day Abundance Plan. The Plan works. However, it requires discipline -- which, unfortunately, many lack. The is not about some imaginary Free Lunch in the Sky. This is about developing Abundance in one's life by developing spiritually. It must be followed fully with attention to detail, with care...One of the side benefits of following the Plan is an increase in abundance of joy. Spend the money (modest). Buy the book. Follow the Plan. Blessings.

Active Side of Infinity CARLOS CASTANEDA

Summary: Depending on whom you talk to, Carlos Castaneda is either one of the very greatest thinkers of the last century, or one of its most accomplished charlatans. Ever since "The Teachings Of Don Juan", the author's "true story" of his encounter with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer who led him on a mesmerising, magical and highly disturbing journey into another world, Castenada has fascinated readers with his extraordinary narratives. Hovering tantalisingly between anthropology and fiction, they offer visions of spiritual universes, worlds within our own that are accessible to anyone bold enough to undertake the psychic and spiritual challenges necessary to reach them. Now, in his last book before he died, Castaneda offers this "collection of the memorable events in my life", at the suggestion, he says, of the shamanic teacher who started it all. This is no random memoir, says Castaneda, but itself a shamanic ritual--the "putting together [of] the sum total of one's emotions and realizations, without sparing anything", in preparation for "the definitive journey" into life after death, or what shamans call "the active side of infinity". What we get is a kind of Castaneda reader or primer, a posthumous overview of the episodes that first brought him to our attention. As always both riveting and bewildering, Castaneda offers a behind-the-scenes gloss on the extraordinary events that inform his best-known books. It will surely have the effect of turning readers back to those first mind-bending volumes. --"Dan Fielder"

Summary: Along with Tony's other book `As It Is', this book made something inside `me' click and as Tony puts it, once the realization of what he is trying to convey hits, the final piece of the jigsaw falls into place - and the search comes to an end.
I have read several writers on this subject including Tolle, Krishnamurti, Osho and so on, and all seemed to have helped me. They all gave a pungent flavour of what this is all about, whetted my appetite for wanting to know more, learn more, keep on searching. And that...I see now, was the problem. They left me wanting more. To me, their method of conveying their message dangled a carrot of enlightenment right in front of me, so close I could almost taste it, or so I thought. But here's the rub: the thought that you are nearing enlightenment perpetuates the desire to reach it, strengthens and solidifies the concept of enlightenment as something real and attainable...and so actually ensures that you will never get there. Because enlightenment, as Tony points out, does not exist. It was never there in the first place except as a concept borne out of your desire to reach it. If there was such a thing, it might be described as the freedom experienced when one is finally free from the desire to be free; when you finally realize that there's no gold at the end of the rainbow, that it was all mind tricks, so you stop looking for it once and for all. When you stop searching, what you are freed or released from is the burden of trying to find something which doesn't exist.
The extent to which you have been led to believe in the concept of enlightenment is the extent of your suffering because it is the extent to which you will never find something which does not exist. For many people, this is crushing news to one's hopes, desires and beliefs, but yet simultaneously, may well be the start of something completely liberating. You may have learned to drop this concept (such as materialism) and that in the past, and this process, you mistook as the `path' to enlightenment, but in reality, as stated, you were simply replacing it with and strengthening another concept - enlightenment. Now, even that sacred concept must be forsaken. But can you accept that no enlightenment exists, that no one has ever been enlightened (even Buddha), nor ever will be?
Be brutally honest with yourself. If you still eagerly await the latest guru book to see if you can `learn something new', you are still seeking, which, as Tony puts it, is the most effective way to avoid liberation. It's not to say that there's no need to read other books. I'm not sure if I would have made sense of Tony Parsons without reading all the others first. Probably not. I've been to one of Tony's talks, and seen some `novices' leave more confused than ever. But for those who have been seeking for many years, turned to this guru and that, trying still in vain to make sense of it all, Tony may well provide that final piece of the jigsaw for you.
For me, 'As It Is' planted the seed of doubt into all my once cherished notions of enlightenment and made them start to crumble. 'All There Is' is a much lengthier book with many more of Tony's conversations that really demolished them further. In my opnion, both are absolute 'must haves' if you are not free. But be warned, you will not be enlightened after reading it.

Summary: This is the fourth 'Abraham' book I have read, having started with 'Ask and It Is Given', and been helped very much by it. The 'Abraham' teachings present a message which is essentially very simple, but so far-reaching that it is helpful to have several books devoted to it. Our thoughts produce a particular vibration, depending on their emotional content; this vibration attracts similar thoughts, which eventually become a physical manifestation. By being aware of how our thoughts FEEL, we will know whether the manifestation which will follow from them will be what we desire, or what we do NOT desire. Armed with this awareness, we can control our life experience, by a simple process of reaching for a thought that feels better. Better feeling thoughts then attract more of the same, and our external experience begins to mirror this. Yes there is some repetition of material between the books, but for me this does not detract from them. Each has a somewhat different angle on the message, and it all helps one to take on board the most helpful tool for positive change I have come across. The books are all easy to read and follow, without ever being patronising, and I find myself referring to them over and over again. Highly recommended.

Summary: At last I get to review this book! I wanted to be sure of what I was reading and about it's value to me, before I wrote this. However, I'm on my fourth or fifth reading of it now and I have to say, I've never found a better book... It's inspirational, motivational, and spiritual and it gives you first-class, sound advice and guidance on how to manifest your desires.
Esther Hicks is a 'channel' for a collection of non-physical entities called Abraham. Throughout this book, Abraham speak and explain about the Law of Attraction and how to use it in our daily lives to help us manifest the life of our dreams. Even if the thought of 'non-physical entities' worries you a little, it's well worth picking this book up, if only for the good it can do you and your life! And it's explained in the first chapter how this all came about and what a wonderful, natural gift this is.
The first part of the book is dedicated to describing the principles of the Law of Attraction, and yes, they do seem to repeat themselves somewhat but this repetition only serves to allow the message to sink further in for me.
The second part of the book details twenty two 'processes'. You can choose from these which ones you will use to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be.
The chapters are short and I found myself unable to put the book down, being gently led from one chapter to the next. And I found that what they are saying makes so much sense when taken in the context of my own life too... And my manifestations are working too. And the more I practise, the better I get!
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Get yours and start manifesting the life of your dreams today.

Summary: This is a great book and one of the first I read on the Astral. It is a really helpful book for the beginner as it tries to outline what the astral is and even gives you exercises to help yourself to use the astral. This book is on a par with those written by Robert Munroe. You both enjoy the book and learn from it, which is always a good combination. This book is not too complicated and gives examples where the astral has been accessed by others and what they experienced during that time. A great book and an excellent starter for the subject of the astral.

Summary: I am a great fan of astral projection books - and OBE realted book - in general. However, i find that this book seems to be a simple incorporation of what all the other books have saif in the past. Many of the techniques that you find within this book will be found, in the origional works, by the likes of Robert A, Monroe and other founders of the 'modern day' areas of the subject. If you are going to buy this book, i would recommend that you simple use you search engine and type OBE as all the contents will be quickly found. What this book does not have in its content, it unfortunatly also lacks in its quantity. It is a very slim read, and not for the likes of avid book fans.

Summary: An intriguing account of the life and times of the extraordinary characters who were drawn to Glastonbury, the Isle of Avalon, at the turn of the 20th century and who became involved in a series of strange events. The story begins with the discovery in St. Bride's Well of a blue glass bowl, rumored to be the Holy Grail, which baffled British Museum experts. This controversy attracted Archdeacon Basil Wilberforce, poet Fiona Macleod, the esotericists A.E. Waite, Annie Besant and Wellesley Tudor Pole, Mark Twain, and the renowned physicist Sir William Crookes. In 1914 the composer Rutland Boughton set up the annual Glastonbury Festivals helped by his friend George Bernard Shaw; Alice Buckton, the educational pioneer, started an arts and crafts and drama center at Chalice Well; the architect Frederick Bligh Bond carried out psychic investigations into the history of Glastonbury Abbey; later, Dion Fortune came to Glastonbury to write some of her best known works. It is a unique document of social and historical significance, full of controversy and bizarre happenings.

Summary: "Blink" is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of "The Tipping Point", campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea. Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. "--Barbara Mackoff"

Written by two leading American Buddhist teachers and scholars, it offers you a uniquely friendly way to explore the fascinating history of Buddhism and discover: Who Buddha was and his significance in world history and spirituality How the practice of Buddhism can enrich your everyday life How Buddha’s teachings combine to create a path to enlightenment Daily observances and meditation practices How to fulfill your highest potential through Buddhism In plain English, experts Jonathan Landaw and Stephan Bodian define the important terms, explain the key concepts and explore, in-depth a wide range of topics, including: Buddha’s life and teachings and the evolution of the major Buddhist traditions How Buddhism works as a religion, philosophy of life and a practical approach to dealing with life’s problems, all rolled into one The idea that the mind is the source of all happiness and suffering How the practices of wisdom and compassion can connect you with your inner spiritual resources Meditation and other core Buddhist practices and how they can affect your everyday life How to apply Buddhist teachings at each stage along the spiritual path Whether you’re a searcher of truth, a student of religions, or just curious about what’s got Richard Gere and all the rest of those celebrity Buddhists so excited, "Buddhism For Dummies" is your intro to Buddhism basics.

Summary: Firstly, I should say that I have only thoroughly read the original title, 'The Tree of Life', of which the above is a rewrite or rename. That was my introduction to the Qabalah (incidentally, I'm not quite sure why the author has changed the English version of the name to Kabbalah from his previously preferred Qabalah), and I have to say it has made an enormous influence on my life. I now believe I have a better than average understanding of Qabalah (I even understand what Regardie is trying to say), so have now bought this new version for several good friends who have expressed an interest, but who I don't want to put off with some of the excessively esoteric or religion biased material that's around. I won't say either that Will Parfitt is extremely easy to comprehend, but then Qabalah is not a simple concept and most of the other apparently introductory stuff I've looked at is lacking in substance or seemingly misunderstands the need for people to recognise the basic principles of Qabalah. However I would certainly recommend this as a best of breed starting point, and have made several purchases of this book, as gifts to friends, simply because I believe it can improve their lives. It is also my personal belief that it should be one of a Qabalist's objectives in life to encourage others, so if you are looking for a starting point, this is the best I have found.

Summary: Conversations with God started when the author in the midst of a frustrating low-point in his life wrote a letter to God and was replied to. The book takes the format of the author questioning and God answering him. The theme that runs continually through the book is to remember our divine origins. Walsch's book makes God accessible in an almost secular way, different to our Bible-based one. An immediate, humorous, "guy next door kinda God" reminding us of basic truths. The book is written for Westerners and is practical and daily-life oriented, with answers on sexuality, money, relationships and health amongst many others. Conversations with God has the potential to reprogramme you to see the divine and spirituality in a totally new light. The question to be asked is "is this really God?" and indeed Walsch asks it and is replied: "What difference does it make? Even if everything I've said is 'wrong', can you think of a better way to live?""No" replies Walsch and if you are searching for spiritual answers and have not found your traditional distant God helpful, then this book could be for you. --Peter Lloyd

Summary: This course is a phenomenon which has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. It was written down by a woman named Helen Schucman who, in 1965, heard a voice say "This is a Course in
Miracles, please take notes". The manual states that this is a special form of the universal course. There are many thousands of other forms, all with the same outcome. It states the Holy Spirit speaks to people
in a language and form that they can understand. This is a step by step curriculum that leads from separation back to oneness with God. It is a course in mind healing, in learning to listen to our own Internal
Counsellor, the Holy Spirit. Here are a couple of its concepts:
In order to remember God in Whom IS our true identity, (in order to return to Him) we must engage in the practice of being loving to one another, no one excluded. For God's love has no exceptions. Only by loving totally can we know the total love that is God. The effect of loving our brothers is to bring our thinking back into accord with how God created us to think. It entails an undoing of the old insane thinking that led us away from God in the first place, which sets us back in the direction of Home.
It teaches that as we give, we will receive to the same measure. If we reject one person we will believe God has rejected us. If we give unconditional love we will know we are loved unconditionally. What we chose to have in our mind is what we experience. Release another from his prison and we open our own prison door.
It tells us that to remember love and God and out true identity we need 'Forgiveness', a process of our mind whereby we relinquish grievances and competetiveness and are healed of guilt & fear that resulted from such unnatural thinking. If God is love, eternal & infinite and He created us in His likeness, then forgiveness is justified. It has a true foundation. There is that of God in everyone. And our task, if we would be saved, is to look beyond darkness, error and barriers, and look only upon the light of God in each person. This is to remove the blocks to the awareness of love's presence. This is to correct our perceptions and to restore our sight. It is a coming to the realization that we
have been mistaken about God's creation. It is to forgive our mistake and to lift the blind we'd closed to stop God's light shining on and through us.
We need to be merciful and patient with ourselves in the process of undoing our false foundations. We invested a lot of effort in our unnatural habits and now need to exert effort in relearning our natural habits. There are 365 lessons to facilitate the unearthing every fear to allow the light to shine them away. A miracle, as defined here, is different to what most people think of a miracle. A miracle is natural. It is an experience we have when we are in our right mind as God created us. This is a course in mind healing. A course in remembering God.
Atonement is the goal. At-One-Ment of Creator and Creation.

Summary: I am in awe of john edward. Anyone who reads this book will realise how silly it is to be sceptic about life continuing after death. This book covers his television show 'crossing over' and is truly phenomenal. John Edwards amazing powers are a gift to him and I don't think many people will be able to do what he does, but there is hope for us all. I believe this life is only the beginning of a truly spectacular journey, which this book helps us to understand. Sceptics must be so gullible to believe all the sceptical propaganda. Buy this book if you have an open mind and are willing to connect with a deeper meaning to life.

Summary: Although I liked this and read it in one day, it was hard to believe that the same author wrote this book as the author of 'Traveller'. The writing style was so different. This book just explains stuff not writing in flowless way. I hated the way author described what happened previously as it was not needed, people were waiting to read this after reading traveller and no repeat was needed. The story was good but it did not stay true to the characters, especially Maya leaving the island and the traveller only with nuns and vicki! This isn't true to her character no matter how she loved Gabriel. It had gaps and laps that made questions the way author got on with the story line and it did not happen in the first book. Slightly dissapointed and I suspect that the same person who wrote "Traveller" wrote the "Dark river". Anyway this is just an opinion so have a read and see as it still manages to keep a level of compellingness.

Summary: We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you would rather not be". But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will still cast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seemingly undesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront our shadows. Only by owning every aspect of yourself can you achieve harmony and "let your own light shine," she explains. "The purpose of doing shadow work, is to become whole. To end our suffering. To stop hiding ourselves from ourselves. Once we do this we can stop hiding ourselves from the rest of the world." As threatening as shadow work may seem, it is often very effective in creating transformation. Ford's step-by-step guidebook is modelled on a highly successful course she developed about embracing the shadow. Ultimately, she helps readers illuminate the gifts and strengths that lie within the shadows. Although this may sound vague, clouded in dark metaphors, Ford manages to make it clear and specific. She has the writing gifts of a successful seminar leader--inspirational, trustworthy, and able to convey murky material with grace and ease. --Gail Hudson

Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: Destructive Emotions and How We Can Overcome Them: A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama forcefully puts to rest the misconception that the realms of science and spirituality are at odds. In this extraordinary book, Daniel Goleman presents dialogues between the Dalai Lama and a small group of eminent psychologists, neuroscientists and philosophers that probe the challenging questions: Can the worlds of science and philosophy work together to recognise destructive emotions such as hatred, craving and delusion? If so, can they transform those feelings for the ultimate improvement of humanity? As the Dalai Lama explains, "With the ever-growing impact of science on our lives, religion and spirituality have a greater role to play in reminding us of our humanity." The book's subject marks the eighth round in a series of ongoing meetings of the Mind Life Institute. The varied perspectives of science, philosophy and Eastern and Western thought beautifully illustrate the symbiosis among the views that are readily accessible, despite their complexity. Among the book's many strengths is its organisation, which allows readers to enjoy the entire five-day seminar or choose sections that are most relevant to their interests--such as "Cultivating Emotional Balance", "The Neuroscience of Emotion", "Encouraging Compassion", or "The Scientific Study of Consciousness". But the real joy is in gaining an insider's view of these extraordinary minds at work, especially that of the Dalai Lama, whose curiosity, Socratic questioning and humour ultimately serve as the lynchpin for the soaring intellectual discussion in the book. --Silvana Tropea, Amazon.com

Summary: So, two people suddenly appear on your sofa from out of nowhere, claiming to be ascended masters and incarnations of people who knew Jesus Christ on a personal basis, while currently functioning as angels. What do you? Obvious - press 'record'.
They spend the next nine years ensuring that you are fully acquainted with the secrets of the universe (a big subject - bound to take a while) and are both really smart and funny, especially the foxy lady angel, who's considerately chosen to materialise as female to add a little sexual chemistry in case you become bored with the 'spiritual' side of the whole thing.
You might wonder how you came to be selected for such intensely focused divine counselling, but your duty now is to somehow share this rare and undiluted knowledge with your fellow man, so - hey, you taped it all - how about writing a book? The career was on the slide anyway...
It turns out there was a book produced in the '60s called A Course In Miracles (aka ACIM), which is even now held in deep reverence within the `seeker' community and proposes a method, through following the 'Course' of the title, of living free from illusion. The author took no responsibility for the writing of it, claiming it was dictated to her by an inner voice - she simply wrote it all down.
The content of ACIM is central to the 'mind-bending conversations' that took place over those nine incredible years of your life, but the really weird thing is, since you taped everything, all you'd have to do to produce your own book is - simply write it all down! Do you see what's happened there? Neat, huh?
The reader may or may not be impressed to know that The Disappearance Of The Universe is presented from the position of Absolute Certainty, but there is no doubt that The Suspension Of Disbelief required to accept its initial pitch must be maintained in order to finish reading it. At least we now have the definitive answer to that pesky old conundrum: does a falling tree make a sound if nobody hears it fall? That's a negative, people. If this news bothers you, be not afraid: the full and divinely authorised explanation is right here.

Summary: Who says the left wing doesn't have a sense of humour? Maybe it doesn't, but in Downsize This! documentarian Michael Moore certainly does. Moore's politics are rabidly liberal, populist and anti-big business--about what you'd expect from the former editor of Mother Jones. While this restricts his audience to those on the left side of the aisle, Downsize This! will be a chance to point and laugh hysterically (if ruefully) at the clique of rich white guys who run everything. Moore is at his best as a prankster, whether it's trying to see if Pat Buchanan will take a campaign donation from the John Wayne Gacy Fan Club (yes) or whether he can have Bob Dornan committed to an insane asylum because of his bizarre behaviour (no, but it was close). Moore is one of America's sharpest satirists, and Downsize This! makes one wish he would write a "Sorry State of the Union" every year. But only if it doesn't cut into his moviemaking--that's too big a price to pay. --Michael Gerber, Amazon.com

Summary: "Emptiness" tackles an oft-misunderstood topic in the Buddhist religion. Here, emptiness does not imply a nihilistic worldview but rather the idea that a permanent entity doesn’t exist in any single phenomenon or being. Everything exists in dependence on an immeasurable quantity of causes and conditions. An understanding of emptiness allows us to see the world as a realm of infinite possibility, instead of a static system. Just like a table consists of wooden parts, and the wood is from a tree, and the tree depends on air, water, and soil, so is the world filled with a wondrous coexistence that extends to our own mind and awareness. In lucid, accessible language, Geshe Tashi Tsering guides the reader to the realization of this infinite possibility.

Summary: A. A. Bailey has 24 books from which to choose. I would agree with the other reviewer that Esoteric Psychology I might be a good place to start. Why? Because most folks grasp that everything is psychology, when you get right down to it. It's a hot topic everywhere. People are always "psychologizing" this, that, and the other. Because of that predeliction, readers will move easily from thinking of psychology as the study of the human mind to esoteric psychology which is the study of the soul. After all, that's what psychology really means...."psyche" = soul and "ology" = study of. Thus, anyone yearning to discover the soul should explore Esoteric Psychology I and then II. For me, the discovery has taken me far and wide, and into all 24 of Bailey's books. The whole experience has been life changing.

I am new to New Thought and its various ideas and I am learning about manifestation now and this highly descriptive book just "happened" to come along. It allows U to slow down and to think about the subject and to practice practicing it with the feeling that we are allways becoming aware of new things and new frames of mind anyway and we realize ourselves in good time with out force, despite "mistakes "along the way.For people who want to be more aware of this amazing Art I suggest read it.It is not Religous in its languague just like many modern New Thought type books, which tend to keep to a more open wording.(?)Enjoy it's inspiration!

Summary: As a boy, Brian Greene read Albert Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus" and was transformed. Camus, in Greene's paraphrase, insisted that the hero triumphs "by relinquishing everything beyond immediate experience." After wrestling with this idea, however, Greene rejected Camus and realized that his true idols were physicists; scientists who struggled "to assess life and to experience the universe at all possible levels, not just those that happened to be accessible to our frail human senses." His driving question in "The Fabric of the Cosmos", then, is fundamental: "What "is" reality?" Over sixteen chapters, he traces the evolving human understanding of the substrate of the universe, from classical physics to ten-dimensional M-Theory. Assuming an audience of non-specialists, Greene has set himself a daunting task: to explain non-intuitive, mathematical concepts like String Theory, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and Inflationary Cosmology with analogies drawn from common experience. For the most part, he succeeds. His language reflects a deep passion for science and a gift for translating concepts into poetic images. When explaining, for example, the inability to see the higher dimensions inherent in string theory, Greene writes: "We don't see them because of the "way" we see…like an ant walking along a lily pad…we could be floating within a grand, expansive, higher-dimensional space." For Greene, Rhodes Scholar and professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, speculative science is not always as thorough and successful. His discussion of teleportation, for example, introduces and then quickly tables a valuable philosophical probing of identity. The paradoxes of time travel, however, are treated with greater depth, and his vision of life in a three-brane universe is compelling and--to use his description for quantum reality--"weird." In the final pages Greene turns from science fiction back to the fringes of science fact, and he returns with rigor to frame discoveries likely to be made in the coming decades. "We are, most definitely, still wandering in the jungle," he concludes. Thanks to Greene, though, some of the underbrush has been cleared. "--Patrick O'Kelley"

Summary: Fantastic to hear such personal accounts from a man who was THERE. No speculation and no-nonsense, Mr. Lamond takes us through the beginnings of the Wiccan movement, with personal accounts of what life was like working with Gardner himself and other people since those days.
I had the priviledge of seeing Mr. Lamond speak at Witchfest in Croydon last year and enjoyed myself very much. Excellent speake and great to hear it from "the horses mouth" rather than the constant speculations on what Wicca is and what it is not. Who could know better than someone who has been practising longer than most people alive today?
This is not a "how to book" for that I would recommend CIRCLE OF FIRE (Rankine & D'Este) or WICCA (by V. Crowley) - -- - but if you are Wiccan or are thinking of following this path as your magickal and spiritual calling, then do yourself a GREAT FAVOUR - READ THIS BOOK NOW. It will give you insights that you can never get anywhere else.
HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This volume is the first of six, and offers a complete presentation of the Buddha's seminal Four Noble Truths which summarize the fundamentals of the Buddhist worldview. Indeed, they are an essential framework for understanding all of the other teachings of the Buddha. The "Four Noble Truths" explores central tenants of Buddhist philosophy in direct, non-sectarian approach, interweaving the insights of the Theravadan and Mahayana views (Buddhism's two major streams). This unique book was developed by Geshe Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan scholar renowned for his ability to render Buddhist teachings accessible and relevant to everyday life.

A personal of integrity and insight, a traveler of many paths, Steve has gathered a wealth of knowledge on the way, a knowledge grounded in his own life and experience. His book could not but reflect the immense wealth of his inner knowing. Freeing the Spirit is marvelous work, a map to the subtle world of Spirit and its workings, a journey through the various aspects of growth that allow for us to finally manifest the fullness of our being and truly "free the spirit" and step into our magnificence. The book covers a range of topics and draws from a variety of traditions exploring psychological aspects of the Self, the masculine/feminine polarity, the conscious mind and the belief structures that form our world. It explores tools for inner transformation from both the psychological and the magical world, eventually drawing us into a journey into the unseen, where we are lead to meet with our friends of Spirit and to connect with them in life enhancing ways. Although Steve Nobel is without a doubt a philosopher and an intellectual in his own right (you will find in this book the profound insights of a dedicated seeker), Freeing the Spirit is much more than a collection of ideas. It is a practical manual for life, with an abundance of tools and ancient wisdom made contemporary and easy to apply to the modern life and issues. A compendium of modern and old, of traditional psychology and the sacred arts, Freeing the Spirit is a gem to behold.

Summary: Over many years and through many books Clive Barker has earned a reputation as the thinking person's horror writer. His novels have mixed fantasy, psychology and sheer creepiness in almost equal quantities, and while the gore quotient remains relatively low the tension always runs high. However, in Galilee Barker tones down the ghoulish in favour of the gothic. His novel (or as the author would have it, "romance") tells the tale of two warring families caught up in a disastrous web of corruption, illicit sexuality and star-crossed love, with a soupçon of the supernatural thrown in as well. On one side are the wealthy Gearys--a fictional stand-in for the Kennedys--and on the other are the Barbarossas, a mysterious black clan that has been around--quite literally--since the time of Adam. Galilee chronicles the twisted course of this centuries- old family feud which centres around the magical Barbarossa matriarch Cesaria and her son Galilee. Indeed, it's the latter figure--one part Heathcliff to one part Christ--whose relationship with the Geary women sets a match to the entire powder keg of hostility and resentment. Mixing standard clichés of romance with his own peculiarly deep-fried version of the Southern gothic, Baker has come up with an intelligent and shamelessly amusing potboiler.

The Gentle Art of Blessing PIERRE PRADERVAND
ISBN: 0954932609

Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is indeed as stated in `Cygnus' magazine destined to become a classic.
The Gentle Art of Blessing takes its name from a text channeled, several years ago, by Pierre Pradervand, which has since spread far and wide. The story of how he came to channel this marvellous text and how it has changed the lives of those it has touched can now be read in this book.
In short Pierre Pradervand was filled with bitterness towards his former employers who forced him to resign
(or work unethically). No matter how hard he tried Pierre a devote Christian could not forgive them (he later discovered they sort his resignation).
Then one day whilst reading the Bible he came upon the following quote from Jesus: "Bless those who curse you". Pierre then proceeded to bless, several times a day, in all aspects of their lives, his former employers. And in a while his bitterness towards them transformed into love. Shortly after this, he awoke one morning with an overpowering urge to write, and upon putting pen to paper the words to `The Gentle Art of Blessing' just flowed:
`On awakening, bless this day, for it is already full
of unseen good which your blessings will call forth;
for to bless is to acknowledge the unlimited good that
is embedded in the very texture of the universe and
awaiting each and all.
On passing people in the street, on the bus, in places
of work and play, bless them. The peace of your
blessing will accompany them on their way and the aura
of its gentle fragrance will be a light to their path.
On meeting and talking to people, bless them in their
health, their work, their joy, their relationships to
God, themselves, and others. Bless them in their
abundance, their finances...bless them in every
conceivable way, for such blessings not only sow seeds
of healing but one day will spring forth as flowers of joy
in the waste places of your own life....'
You don't need to buy this book to read the full text as it is widely available. But what this book does give you is an abundance of inspirational stories of how lives have been changed for the better by blessing. If gives you the impetus to bless no matter what obstacles are put in your path. Furthermore blessing keeps you focused, and centred, something which we are all striving for. With this in mind I believe this book is the perfect accompaniment to Eckhart Tolle's classic `The Power of Now'. And deserves a place alongside it on any bookshelf.

Summary: Glamour is much more than a term used to describe Hollywood celebrities - it is an illusory climate that effects all of humanity through a distortion of truth and a delusion of reality. This book provides an excellent description of how glamour bewilders, confuses and contributes to the problems of the world. In addition, it details the way out of the menacing influence of glamour by focusing conscious awareness in the mind and the light of the soul. This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to find the way out of the fog, chaos and misconceptions of glamour and help humanity enter into the light of truth and reality.

Summary: The Final Chapter
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him. In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectactular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again. Why We Love Harry
Favourite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favourite moments, characters, and artefacts from the first six books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him. * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists. * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards. * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius. * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother. * The Duelling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Duelling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'. * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behaviour in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children. * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming. * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone. * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager. * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape. * Dumbledore's confession to Harry.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
* This book is much darker than the rest. Lord Voldemort has been creating chaos in the Wizard and Muggle communities alike, the war is in full swing and the Wizarding community now lives in fear. * It is much more emotional. The story turns at the whim of a temperamental teenager from war and life-changing tragedy, to euphoria and glistening happiness. Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

Summary: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth book in J.K. Rowling’s bestselling series, picks up shortly after we left Harry at the end of The Order of the Phoenix. Lord Voldemort is acting out in the open, continuing his reign of terror which was temporarily stopped almost 15 years beforehand. Harry is again at the Dursleys, where the events of the previous month continue to weigh on his mind, although not as much as the impending visit from his Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Given their last meeting, Harry is understandably confused as to why the old wizard would want to visit him at home. Rowling opens with a chapter she had wanted to use for the first book, of The Philosopher’s Stone--Lord Voldemort has been creating chaos in the Wizard and Muggle communities alike, the war is in full swing and the Wizarding community now lives in fear. The press have been questioning the events at the Ministry which led to the admission of Voldemort’s return, and of course Harry’s name is mentioned a number of times. Harry’s got his problems, but his anxiety is nothing compared to Hermione’s when the OWL results are delivered. There’s a new Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher, an assortment of new characters and creatures, and startling revelations about past characters and events. Gone is the rage-filled Harry of The Order of the Phoenix--he’s not being kept in the dark any more, his unjustified Quidditch ban has been lifted and he has matured considerably in his short time out of school. Half-Blood Prince follows Harry into the world of late-teens, and his realisation that nobody is infallible has made his growth that much easier. Accepting his destiny, Harry continues to behave as teenagers do, enjoying his time with his friends, developing his relationships outside of his usual circle, and learning more about how he must, eventually, do what he is destined to do. J.K. Rowling delivers another fantastic tale which will have the readers gasping for more, capturing the characters perfectly and continuing a tale which readers will enjoy over and over again. --Ziggy Morbi

Summary: As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief… or will it? Book five in JK Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teenager. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny from the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth: that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toad-like and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of defence against dark arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the high inquisitor of Hogwarts. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their examinations, devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team line-up, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black and white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energised as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvellous magical series. --Emilie Coulter

Summary: Celebrity medium James Van Praagh has offered enormous comfort to the bereaved by helping them converse with their deceased loved ones. Rather than hoarding the secrets to his phenomenal success as a clairvoyant, Van Praagh now offers Heaven and Earth--a step-by-step course in developing psychic ability. He shows readers how to heighten each of their senses, not just the sixth one. In another chapter he describes the methods that spirits use to contact us, such as instilling thoughts that seem like "inspirations" (which mean "in spirit," according to Van Praagh). He also teaches readers how to protect themselves from negative entities, such as "psychic vampires". True to his bestselling formula in Talking to Heaven and Reaching to Heaven, Van Praagh uses real-life anecdotes to keep the narrative grounded and compelling. And there's an unexpected bonus: buried within the chapter "Psychic Protection," Van Praagh shares his clairvoyant insight into the assassination of US President John F Kennedy. --Gail Hudson, Amazon.com

Summary: Are you fascinated by the current obsession with all things spiritual? Would you like to learn more about the history of the New Age movement? Discover why it has become so influential over the past few decades? Read more by its leading thinkers? New Age holistic spirituality can be an overwhelming, confusing subject. William Bloom's Holistic Revolution provides the perfect introduction to anyone currently involved in a holistic movement or anyone seeking to become involved in one. Bloom, a prominent and authoritative commentator on the New Age for the past 20 years and one of its foremost spokesmen, is ideally placed to compile this book. Co-founder of the pioneering New Age forum, Alternatives at St James's Church, Piccadilly, in London, Bloom has gathered together a series of key writings and produced the very first authoritative introduction to the central themes and thinkers of the rapidly growing holistic movement. Bloom includes work by all the leading holistic gurus--Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Carlos Castaneda and Fritjof Capra to name just a few--and this impressive range of world-renowned authorities gives the book enormous weight. Through their writing Bloom looks at why the holistic approach has become so popular--locating the movement in its historical and cultural context--and makes a compelling case for its continuing significance. Chapter headings range from "New Science", "Shamanism and Magical Traditions" through to "Holistic Health and Healing" and "Modern Prophecy", giving the book a truly encyclopaedic feel. The range and overview of the book is ambitious and unparalleled, the research meticulous. Bloom's own clear, insightful introduction sets the tone for this thought-provoking, fascinating study of holism--a truly millennial book to which the reader will undoubtedly return again and again. --Meg Slyfield

Summary: A Short Guide to the Boundless, Timeless and Endless.
Everything you might want to know about infinity — in history, and all the way to today’s cutting-edge science. Throughout history, the Infinite has been a dangerous idea. Men have lost their lives, their careers, or their freedom for talking about it. Where did the idea come from, and what is it telling us about the universe? Can there actually be infinities, or is infinity just a label for something that is never reached? Can you do an infinite number of things in a finite amount of time? Is the universe infinite? Will it exist forever?
All manner of paradoxes and fantasies characterize an infinite universe. If our universe is infinite, then an infinite number of exact copies of you are at this very moment reading an identical sentence on an identical planet somewhere else in the universe. So what is it like to live in a universe where nothing is original, where you can live forever, where anything that can be done, is done, over and over again?
These are some of the deep questions that the idea of the infinite pushes us to ask. The Infinite Book will explore these provocative questions and the strange answers that scientists, mathematicians, philosophers and theologians have come up with to deal with its threats to our sanity.

Summary: Rather than encouraging us to seek God, Jason Shulman believes we need only make ourselves available to receive God, who is always present and awaiting us. In The Instruction Manual for Receiving God, Shulman lays out a practical path for experiencing the presence of God through 108 "seed passages"—powerful, provocative statements that turn the mind and open the heart. A detailed commentary accompanies each seed passage, illuminating the depth and meaning of its precious message. Reading this book is like entering a personal sanctuary within which readers can: • Experience complete liberation—the act of being present to what it means to be truly human • Feel the constant rain of compassion washing over their spiritual lives, and receive the sacred blessings that are endlessly offered by Reality itself • Learn practical ways to connect to the Divine on a daily basis Whether read cover-to-cover or opened to a random verse, The Instruction Manual for Receiving God is a book readers of all faiths will cherish and return to time and again. Here, Jason Shulman offers contemplations that access—in a palpable way—the reality of God, "who is always knocking at the door of our hearts ... and whose Voice is always speaking."

Summary: A guidebook to using the Kabbalah to transform our consciousness in order to heal the body, mind, and spirit
• Describes a process of unification with God and the healing implications of that process for our daily life
• Introduces four kabbalistic universes that form a topographical map of reality
• Offers a unique perspective on human consciousness and the nature of existence from a leading modern kabbalist
"Kabbalistic Healing" shows how the Kabbalah--the Jewish mystical path to knowing reality--can kindle the central fire in our being so that we can unite with the divine. It describes the ultimate healing possible for the human soul: an awakening to our true nature that makes our former life seem as if we have been asleep.
The Kabbalah is not an advanced study; it is the first study, because it speaks directly to our fundamental desire to know what life is about. To Shulman, the Kabbalah is the living experience of our real self, the self that is always connected to God, the self that lives in God the way a fish lives in water.
Kabbalistic Healing is about the process of unification, of joining with reality, and the implications of that process for daily life. It draws upon the author’s work at A Society of Souls, which promotes the belief that the ultimate form of healing is to create a unitive or nondual state of consciousness, integrating the healthy human ego into its proper relationship with transcendent reality. As we deepen our understanding of our true selves and enhance our ability to hold new states of consciousness, we are able not only to heal ourselves but to help heal others as well.

Summary: "The Secret" is a great book which has introduced the mass public to the beliefs held within the laws of attraction. In the book/ DVD a number of great believers are interviewed. Ester Hicks is probably one of the most respected on the subject. She speaks with kindness and wisdom about how the individual can utilise the powers within the ether, and within themselves to live a better life. The Law of Attraction is deep and comprehensive read, although at times it can get a bit heavy. Also look at the marvelous Dr Wayne DIER whose book 'You See it When you Believe it' which is complimentary to Ester Hicks book, which at times can jar because of its use of American phrasing and spelling.
'The ULTIMATE guide to Cosmic Ordering' by ANDRONICOU covers the same themes in a more direct manner that, as a Brit, is easier to read, absorb, and enjoy. Whilst the Hicks book suffers for its density it is a comprehensive read and should be put on your reading pile.

Summary: I am planning to move to London soon and bought this book for practical advice and information relating to London. Unfortunately, the book would be better called 'Living & Working'. There is little information relating to London itself and most of the advice is focussed on the obvious. For example "It is always difficult to know where to start in such a move. Do you find a job first or do you find accommodation first?" This is one of the hardest and most stressful things about moving anywhere that involves relocating. What would have been useful would have been advice on e.g approaching landlords when you are out of work, ways around the problem and lists of agents in London who could help. But no, the book leaves this issue at that simple sentence. This theme is prevalent through the whole book - telling you what the problems are without any solution. On the other hand, the book would be useful for someone moving for the first time, moving away from home for example or relocating from another country. Otherwise don't bother!!

Summary: This book contains alot of rituals performed by Crowley and are made easily undertandable by Duquette's explanations.
This is the best book I have ever bought on the subject of magick.
It contains a few rituals simple enough for the novice and you can work your way up to more complex stuff.
Also contained in this book is The Book Of The Law in it's entirety.
I highly recommend this book for begginers and experienced practitioners of occult.
I would advise buying a book like this by Duquette rather than Crowley's original works, as they can be quite confusing.

Summary: I really feel that someone has to point out how poor this book is. Firstly its HOPELESSLY out of date. There is hardly any coverage of modern video techniques, let alone equipment. The book it self is very dense. I'm not some thicky who needs all my books to have pictures but I really strongly feel that it is not appropriate to write book about such a visual medium with out any illustrative images whatsoever.
The only reason I give this book two stars rather than one is because it is clear that Barry Hempe is talking with wisdom and experience and if you have maybe read every other book out there and are just looking for a curio this book may have some value. Apart from that I seriously recommend looking somewhere else for a more practical up-to-date guide.

ISBN: 1577310454
ListPrice: $14.95
Edition: Second Revised
Rating: 4.5 (6 votes)
Date Added: 05 Jul 2008
Summary: Having read her first book, I was interested as to where the second book would take this. In this book, Ms. Roth extends her Five Rhythms to be included as part of everyday life. This is a natural progression, and Ms. Roth draws parallels to include similar patterns. She discusses the Cycles of Life - Birth, Childhood, Puberty, Maturity and the Death, in which we can see these rhythms and the progressions. Life does indeed have a rhythm to it and she sees these as the "dance of life in five movements". The final step to this dance is healing, a bringing about of the oneness of ones self. This is done by embodying the spirit through the five levels of consciousness: inertia, inspiration, imitation, intuition and imagination. This is her path to ecstasy. She finds dance and life has a map we can follow and find the spiritual ecstasy we all seek in our lives. Her method of writing, incorporating her own personal life rhythms and experiences and her insightful observations make this book a wonderful and easy read. We can always learn from other people's experiences and Ms. Roth weaves this well. Her days working at Esalan enabled Ms. Roth to put together her then acquired skills, tune them, put them into practical use and give us the final product here in this book. She shows how these rhythms are present in each persons life and can be applied to our personal self healing, attunement, stress relief, personal relationships and general health and well being. I enjoyed this book and found Ms. Roth's insightful self-questioning and personal exploration a path that can be incorporated into each person's life, as a whole or with partial application. It definitely left me thinking upon things I have since considered and seek to explore further. Both books here are complimented by her music and she also has an instructional video "The Wave" as a visual aid to her work. You need not have magic dancing toes or be a rhythmic person to apply any of this. All you need is the ability to move.

Summary: This book touches upon the same subjects as Deida's other books. If you can't stand Deida, then this is not for you. Personally I have received immense inspiration from some of his works. While I found "The way of the superior male" a bit superficial; "Intimate communion" was angst provoking for me and has changed the way I think and feel about male-female relations forever. Naked Budism is written as 39 simple, but very deep chapters. Each has inspired me to view things differently or feel more intensely and being more honest with myself. Not bad for a book, that is so clearly and succintly written that it can be enjoyed on a plane. Highly recommended.

Summary: This book will probably go down in history as being the first of its kinds. Mr del Campo has given us a look into the life of a Thelemic magician. Unlike much of the Thelemic material already available, Mr del Campo has portrayed this beautiful philosophical system in a positive and respectfull manner. Much new information has been added to the 2000 edition: a chapter explaining Qabalah, Mythology, and how to use these tools for ritual work, as well as a Qabalistic interpretation of the Thelemic dieties. If you need a Thelemic primer, this is a great place to begin.

One Last Time: A Psychic Medium Speaks to Those We Have Loved and Lost JOHN EDWARD
ISBN: 0749919795
ListPrice: £9.99
Rating: 4.84
Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: One Last Time is an account of the work of a 30-year-old psychic medium, written with a refreshingly upfront attitude usually rare in such books. John Edward began having psychic experiences when a young child and by the time he was a teenager, people were asking him for readings. Before long he realised that he wasn't just getting psychic impressions from his clients, but was actually receiving messages from the dead. The title of the book comes from a conversation with his mother shortly before she died, when he said that people should be given "one last time to talk to the people in their lives"; it is this, he believes, that he is doing. Edward is honest about his own doubts and his problems: "I never forget that I can always be wrong. What I do is full of ambiguity and inconsistency, and sometimes second guesses." Although he hears the spirits speaking to him, there are often problems in the communication: "If there was one thing I would ask the spirits, it would be to slow down and speak more clearly." One Last Time is a warm and engaging read, totally lacking the often sickly pious preaching found in many other books about communicating with "the Other Side". John Edward is down-to-earth and straightforward and doesn't pretend to have all the answers. This, more than anything, makes the book both enjoyable and believable. --David V Barrett

Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: Move over James Redfield. Since The Power of Now was published in the US in 1999 (2001 in the UK), Eckhart Tolle has become the exciting new name on the guru scene. Tolle's message is profound, but like many of the best spiritual messages, quite simple: you need to discover your true self. That's not the person who walks and talks, or even the person inside your head who thinks your thoughts. Step back, Tolle says, and observe the process of thinking; the person doing the observing is the real you. And the only moment that is real is Now; the past and future can both drag you down, so live in the current moment. This is the path to Enlightenment or Self-Realisation. For those who have been deeply impressed by Tolle's first book and are waiting for a follow-up, note that Practising the Power of Now is not a new book; it is a collection of extracts from the original book--the edited highlights--and short spiritual exercises. Apparently, it is designed primarily for those who already have the original book, but want a slim and concise volume they can carry around and dip into--the meat without the veg, so to speak. In comparison with the original book, Practising the Power of Now does seem a little scrappy. It's full of profound messages, but the well-argued connecting material is missing. For those who haven't read either, the original The Power of Now is certainly better value for money--twice the length at the same price. But for fans, for those who prefer bite-sized spiritual truths, or as a gift to either of these, Practising the Power of Now contains all of Tolle's teaching in an easily accessible format. --David V Barrett

ISBN: 0007154534

Summary: In Prey, bestselling author Michael Crichton introduces bad guys that are too small to be seen with the naked eye but who are no less deadly or intriguing than the runaway dinosaurs that made 1990's Jurassic Park such a blockbuster success. High-tech whistle-blower Jack Forman used to specialise in programming computers to solve problems by mimicking the behaviour of efficient wild animals--swarming bees or hunting hyena packs, for example. Now he's unemployed and is finally starting to enjoy his new role as stay-at-home dad. All would be domestic bliss if it were not for Jack's suspicions that his wife, who's been behaving strangely and working long hours at the top-secret research labs of Xymos Technology, is having an affair. When he's called in to help with her hush-hush project, it seems like the perfect opportunity to see what she's been doing, but Jack quickly finds there's a lot more going on in the lab than an illicit affair. Within hours of his arrival at the remote testing centre, Jack discovers his wife's firm has created self-replicating nanotechnology--a literal swarm of microscopic machines. Originally meant to serve as a military eye in the sky, the swarm has now escaped into the environment and is seemingly intent on killing the scientists trapped in the facility. The reader realises early, however, that Jack, his wife and their fellow scientists have more to fear from the hidden dangers within the lab than from the predators without. The monsters may be smaller in this book, but Crichton's skill for suspense has grown, making Prey a scary read that's hard to set aside. It's not without minor flaws: the science in this novel requires more explanation than did the cloning of dinosaurs, leading to lengthy and sometimes dry academic lessons. And while the coincidence of Xymos's new technology running on the same program that Jack created keeps the plot moving, it may be more than some readers can swallow. But thanks in part to a sobering foreword in which Crichton warns of the real dangers of technology that continues to evolve more quickly than common sense, Prey succeeds in gripping readers with a tense and frightening tale of scientific suspense. --Benjamin Reese

Summary: I've got a few books on psychic protection, but this one is definately my favourite.
It goes through every issue related to psychic disturbance I could possibly think of and manages to dicuss the relevant subjects in a chatty, but educated manner. Matthews manages to explain many sensitive issues in a way that keeps things light and entertaining.
I would recommend this book to anyone embarking on a spiritual lifestyle, or to anyone who often feels uncomfortable or scared sometimes without understanding why.

Remote Viewing Secrets: A Handbook JOSEPH MCMONEAGLE
ISBN: 1571741593
ListPrice: £13.99
Rating: 3.33
Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: Joseph McMoneagle was one of the original remote viewers (he was # 001) recruited into the US military's Project STARGATE, a once secret army project designed to use trained remote viewers for spying during the Cold War. For the uninitiated, remote viewing (often referred to as RV) is a skill that allows a person (viewer) to envision events, people or objects that are not within eyesight--in another room or in another country (and sometimes in the future). McMoneagle believes that anybody can be trained in remote viewing (no "psychic" gifts required). However, it requires a huge commitment and highly disciplined mind. Using the analogy of martial arts, McMoneagle sees RV training in levels, starting with "White Belt" where viewers can expect to see a "gestalt" (an overall impression) of a target. By the time readers reach the "Red/Black Belt-Great Master", McMoneagle claims they will have gained "a near-perfect union of one's paranormal talent blended within extant reality. People who reach this level no longer have to think about it, they simply do". Although readers won't become a "Great Master" by reading this one book, McMoneagle does provide a comprehensive training programme as well as important chapters on the ethics, protocol and applications of remote viewing. --Tara West

Summary: I could not put this book down once I picked it up. I can see that it may not appeal to some readers because of the title but there is a lot of positive energy to be found at the time of the dark moon. I particularly liked the phases of the moon meditation and have used it to very good effect - this coming from a person who usually finds meditation hard work! The rituals for each sign of the zodiac are also excellent and easy to follow or adapt for personal use. On the other hand, I argued with my friend over whether there is a distiction between the dark moon and the new moon which this book makes - but we each need to make our own personal decision about that and my friend and I agreed to differ! Well worth the read and a book which I shall cherish having on my bookshelf and which I shall regularly read.

The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time DOUGLAS ADAMS
ISBN: 0330323121
ListPrice: £6.99
Edition: New Ed
Editor: Peter Guzzardi
Rating: 4.41
Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: The Salmon of Doubt is the late Douglas Adams' third comic novel about "holistic detective" Dirk Gently. Ten tantalising chapters of this unfinished project are padded to book size with about 50 short Adams pieces, mostly non-fiction. Additional material includes introductions by Stephen Fry and editor Peter Guzzardi (who stitched together the Salmon fragment from disk drafts), The Guardian's Adams biography, Richard Dawkins' farewell piece, and the order of the memorial service. The non-fiction by the man himself ranges from perhaps a dozen meaty articles and speeches to brief squibs, interview/questionnaire answers and tiny asides like: We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works. How do you recognise something that is still technology? A good clue is if it comes with a manual. There are enjoyable pieces on computers (especially), atheism, dogs, manta rays on the Great Barrier Reef, the Save the Rhino stunt climb, and PG Wodehouse. Much of the rest is ephemeral; you can't help reflecting that Adams himself never chose to collect all this lightweight newspaper work. Lovers of his fiction will welcome the Hitch-Hiker-related short stories "The Private Life of Genghis Khan" and "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe", despite the latter's dreadfully dated political punch line. What of The Salmon of Doubt itself, a quarter of this book? There's a glimpse of a far-future estate agent's utopia, a woman asking Dirk Gently to investigate a cat that's literally only half there (his puzzling reluctance to take the case may echo Adams' own feelings about the novel), Gently's capricious trip to America in response to an unknown client's total lack of instructions, the tragic death of a rhino as perceived by the rhino... Many teasing questions; we'll never know the answers. Overall it's a must-have for devoted Adams fans and completists, a likely disappointment (though with pleasant exceptions) for new readers. --David Langford

Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer: The Hidden Power of Beauty, Blessing, Wisdom and Hurt GREGG BRADEN

Rating: 5.0 (1 votes)
Date Added: 17 Feb 2007
Summary: I read Gregg Braden's Divine Matrix first which was published after this book, and they contain similar material. However, you will gain from reading both.
It is a delightfully packaged little book, small, red and with a padded cover. You are drawn to it before you read one word of the stunning content.
The first page tells you everything about it:
"This book is written for those in search of comfort in the presence of fear and uncertainty in our world. In those moments when life's hurts tear into the hidden places of your soul, I invite you to enter the refuge of beauty, blessing, our lost mode of prayer, and the deep wisdom that each rests upon..."
Yes, other books will claim this too, because having read dozens of books about spirituality, it is no surprise the best are all singing the same song. What makes this book different is that it is free from jargon, and puts the complex message over powerfully as five core `secrets.'
I have long used the expression `you're a beauty' [probably gleaned from Robert Lindsay's Fagin in Oliver Twist], as a term of endearment, without ever really paying attention to its deeper meaning. Braden breathes life into the word and explains how beauty, whilst subjective holds us all in its thrall.
So, when you pray feel the answer, imagine what you want has happened, learn from hurt, use the power of blessing in your life, let beauty `be the transformer' and create your own prayers.
Simple? Yes. Powerful? Incredibly. How? Get the book.

Serenity: The Official Visual Companion JOSS WHEDON
ISBN: 1845760824
ListPrice: £16.99
Rating: 4.67
Date Added: 05 Nov 2005
Summary: I remember being impressed a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away from that of Joss Whedon's "Serenity" when they published the scripts for the original "Star Wars" films with pre-production paintings and storyboards. So it is with a profound sense of understatement that I can tell you that "Serenity: The Official Visual Companion" is the proverbial much, much more. There certainly are the promised visuals, consisting of dozens of pieces of not only production art and storyboard but also movie stills. Being able to see a production painting of a deserted street on Miranda next to a photograph of the actual set, the storyboards for the escape from the Reavers on Lilac, the conceptual art for the Alliance spaceships, and Inara's costume designs are all worth the looking. But there is a far amount of worthwhile reading between these covers as well and that is what makes this companion volume essential for fans. The cover trumpets that this book has an introduction and the motion picture screenplay by JOSS WHEDON, but in between the cheery welcome to the book and the full shooting script (i.e., it includes scenes cut form the final edit) there is 32-page interview with Whedon conducted by Abbie Bernstein. In it Joss talks about how he originally developed "Firefly" and its main characters, how he had the opportunity to make a movie version, and what it was like making the film. So this is an in-depth interview and not simply a case of ten or twenty questions. But, wait, boys and girls, there is more, because in the pages of that interview you will find Whedon's pre-production memos on "A Brief History of the Universe circa 2507 A.D.," "Frame/Lens/Perspective," "Light," and "Music" (Yes, Joss has worked out what music will be like in 500 years). We have known for some time that Whedon pays attention to detail, and here is the textual evidence that proves the point. Bernstein does a good job of not just setting up Whedon, who always provides long replies to any and all questions, but also of asking questions about things fans want to hear about (you will find out more about the series and the film from this interview than you will from listening to the commentary track Joss made for the DVD and that commentary track was not hay). Consequently, this is much more than a visual companion, as stunning as that part of the book can be. Once you read all of the background material you can sit down with the shooting script and follow along while watching the film to see not only what has been altered or deleted, but also to enjoy Whedon's stage directions (If you read any of the script books for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" then you know there are always some fun little comments worked into his scripts). This is an absolute must have volume for the legion of fans of the television show and theatrical film. Final note: I thought the blue tinted shot of River with Mal's head behind her that appears on the cover of the "Serenity" premium trading cards binder looked pretty good and while they follow the same basic design with the cover for this book they have used a much better shot of Summer Glau as River (plus adding a shot of Firefly in flight from the binder's back cover rather than the Serenity symbol). The "Serenity" poster that is available is actually a cross between the two, the original River with the Firefly from this one, which is good, but not great.

Date Added: 31 Mar 2006
Summary: Although there are already a number of 'academic' books on the Buffy phenomenon available, this one is a little different. Rather than serious analysis of the show, this book contains short chapters from several science fiction authors and writers, who give their opinions on different aspects of the show. There's no difficult jargon, no referencing, just fans of the show discussing and celebrating seven seasons of Buffy. The chapters vary in their length and quality, but cover topics such as the links between sex and death, fans of the show, individual characters and an impassionaed argument as to why Buffy should be going out with Wesley! The chapters are not always postive toward the show, and there is some criticism of the last two seasons, but this is an interesting read for any fans of the show, or even just the casual viewer. It's a good starting point for any serious study of Buffy due to its readability, and, provided you can overlook the bias toward the character of Spike, worthy of a place on your bookshelf.

Summary: This text argues that in an increasingly complex world, "simplicity" is going to be a key value. The pace of change is not going to stop so we have to make a conscious effort to make things simpler. Edward de Bono shows that very often a lateral thinking approach can simplify a complex matter.

Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: In Soul Power is everything you need to journey safely and happily to spiritual enlightenment. The integrity and sincerity of the author resonates in the words on every page. An account of the smallest experience drawing on it lessons which can be shared with others is more valuable than the grandest theory. It is Nikki's own journey and what she has learned which makes this book of priceless value. Methodically she shines a light on the ego explaining why it is the most subtle obstacle on the spiritual path and shows how it can be recognised and dissolved gently and compassionately. She offers practical exercises for making what she says a reality in readers lives if they are only humble and courageous enough to try them. Most importantly she demonstrates that there is nothing in the inner life of thoughts, feelings and emotions to be afraid of. She gives each reader the tools and space to find this out for themselves and is proof that spiritual intuitions and insights are available to everyone. With searing honesty she documents her own fall of the ego and I came away with more hope and enthusiasm and more awareness than I have come away from reading most spiritual books. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Stillness Speaks: Whispers of Now ECKHART TOLLE
ISBN: 0340829745
ListPrice: £7.99
Rating: 5
Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: Expanding on his mantra--"Get out of your head and into the moment"--Eckhart Tolle offers this new book on living in the now. Stillness Speaks emphasises the art of "inner stillness"--the place where thoughts, ego and attachments fall always and we are left only with what the moment has to offer: "When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose touch with the world". Don't expect this to be a quick skim or even a straight-through read. Like his previous bestselling book The Power of Now, Tolle uses brief entries and numerous white spaces to give readers easy in-and-out access into enticing spiritual insights that expound on inner stillness, such as learning the difference between surrender and resignation, overcoming the fear death, and how to end suffering. In fact, this is designed to be an ongoing conversation. Pick it up any time or any place, but be sure to allow for plenty of breaks for serious contemplation. Even as you occasionally abandon the book, don't abandon the teachings, pleads Tolle. Embracing and practicing inner stillness is no longer a luxury, he writes, but a necessity if humankind is not to destroy itself. At the present time the dysfunction of the old consciousness and the arising of the new are both accelerating. Paradoxically things are getting worse and better at the same time, although "the worse" is more apparent because it makes so much noise. Devotees who have read all of Tolle's books and audio tapes probably won't find new ideas or information here. But they may appreciate the refresher course--revisiting familiar concepts in a slightly different package. --Gail Hudson, Amazon.com

Stupid White Men: ...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation MICHAEL MOORE
ISBN: 0141011904
ListPrice: £7.99
Edition: New Ed
Rating: 3.37
Date Added: 29 Mar 2006
Summary: Stupid White Men, Michael Moore's screed against "Thief-in-Chief" George Bush's power elite, hit No. 1 at Amazon.com within days of publication. Why? It's as fulminating and crammed with infuriating facts as any right-wing bestseller, as irreverent as The Onion, and as noisily entertaining as a wrestling smackdown. Moore offers a more interesting critique of the 2000 election than Ralph Nader's Crashing the Party (he argued with Nader, his old boss, who sacked him), and he's serious when he advocates ousting Bush. But Moore's rage is outrageous, couched in shameless gags and madcap comedy: "Old white men wielding martinis and wearing dickies have occupied our nation's capital.... Launch the SCUD missiles! Bring us the head of Antonin Scalia!... We are no longer [able] to hold free and fair elections. We need UN observers, UN troops". Moore's ideas range from on-the-money (Arafat should beat Sharon with Gandhi's non-violent shame tactics) to over-the-top: blacks should put inflatable white dolls in their cars so racist cops will think they're chauffeurs; the ever-more-Republicanesque Democratic Party should be sued for fraud;"no contributions toward advancing our civilization ever came out of the South [except Faulkner, Hellman, and RJ Reynolds]," because it's too hot to think straight there; Korean dictator Kim Jong-il "has got to broaden himself beyond porn and John Wayne" by watching better movies, like Dude, Where's My Car? (which contains "all you need to know about America"). Whatever your politics, Stupid White Men should make you blow your stack. --Tim Appelo

Summary: The Crowley Thoth Tarot deck included in this gift set is without doubt fascinating and beautiful. The plastic box of the gift set is very nice and the book is easy to read for beginners. However, the cards are simply put in the plastic box without a usual small paper box. This makes it very inconvenient when you want to carry your cards with you --- you have to carry the whole plastic box, which is very large! Also, in order to use the Thoth deck, the book by Ziegler included in this gift set is not enough at all. "The Crowley Tarot: The Handbook to the Cards" by Akron and Banzhaf has more detailed explanation of the cards.

Summary: Victor Sanchez does what should be done with any path with heart, he follows it. Sanchez has done everything Casteneda had done and found out, through his own rigors, and through the real life experiences with the Wirrarika and Nauhas tribes of Mexico(ancient descedents of the ancient Toltecs of Tula, whom share ancestors with others including the Yaqui. In other words, Sanchez has successfully put in to practice Castaneda's books; and he knows how to explain what he and Casteneda have done. He concretely and susinctly explains everything of use in the Castaneda books. He breaks it down meaning for meaning, all the while giving practical insights on how to actually implement Toltec spiritual living. His suggestions on implementing these ideas are miraculous and inspirational. This book is ideal for any serious reader or skeptic of the Castaneda. Sanchez is able corroborate, as a witness, another indigenous tribe whom have even more purely kept alive the ancient Toltec traditions. He, in fact, gives convincing credence by sighting other references in which he has also discovered corroborating evidence. In "Toltecs of the Millenium" (Sanchez'96) he indepthly goes into his experiences with this Wirrarika, which took place for fifteen years in the virtual seclusion of an obscure mountainous area of (I'm assuming) North-central, to N.W. Mexico. Both are very well written, clear, informative, and very inspirational.

Summary: "The Celestine Prophecy" written about ten years ago had a profound effect on my spiritual understanding. Since then I have looked at relationships and energy dynamics in a whole new way. "The Tenth Insight" deepened my insights by allowing me to understand how many of the world's problems can be solved with new spiritual vision.
Lately I had been looking for current inspiration in a book that carried in a tradition similar to James Redfield. I found it in "Nexus: A Neo Novel."
"The Celestine Prophecy" started the trend in uncovering trends for a new age and crystallized it into a vision. That vision is carried on today in "Nexus" through the journey of people to a spiritual retreat. All of these books together show that we are reaching a greater awareness.
Like "The Celestine Prophecy," "Nexus is also growing among spiritual individuals ready for a message of transformation. Each one of us can share in the spiritual vision present in these books and also tell others about them.
Spiritually we are reaching a critical level and the message found in books by James Redfield and currently in "Nexus: A Neo Novel" is helping in our spiritual growth.

Summary: I have given this book and Hammerschlag's other great work, "The Dancing Healers," as a set to my sons for college graduation. They hope their college experinces will help them make a living. I know these books will help them live.
Dr. Hammerschlag provides us the rationale found in Western medicine that explains why the art of healing has flourished, isolated from mainstream society, in the hogans and pueblos of the American Southwest.
Through these reminiscences of healing, the reader also gains a sobering insight into the consequesnces, physical and psychological, suffered by those of us whose lives are devoid of spiritual vitality.
Hammerschlag certainly provides valuable information but his gift to us in these volumes is wisdom. I have enjoyed many books but few have effected my life as these have. Should you ever meet him, thank him for myself and my sons.

Summary: Deep, profound, complicated and eventually simple, like all truths....I have had this book for several years, I have read parts of many times and I am just about to delve into it yet again. A book to read and digest slowly. The information is so profound it takes time to assimilate and a certain level of previous understanding of metaphysical concepts to grasp at all. Not for the beginner on the path, just as a doctorate level physics text is not enjoyable for someone in secondary school. It takes some patience and dedication but is very much worth the effort. Profound.

Summary: First off, i would not recommend this book for anyone unfamiliar with Alice Bailey's writing. (Or, if you will, the Tibetian she channels.) I remember the first book of hers i read, was TELEPATHY, which helped me learn many of the theosophical definitions and ontological classifications. Another good first read may be GLAMOUR A WORLD PROBLEM. It's not filled with technical terms. Then again, some people may find that reading other theosophists, or perhaps ISIS UNVEILED is the first step. We are each on individual paths. However, if theosophical terminology isnt new to you, and you have a passing aquaintance with Buddhism, Christianity, hermetism and Hinduism, then you may find information in the book that you could use towards your spiritual evolution, and for the group work of your ray type. Like most spiritual reading, this book will give you what you need for wherever you are, while confusing you about those topics you are not either ready or permited to learn. After all, spiritual insight enters the disciple from the Buddhic plane, the plane of spiritual intuition. This book is both KEY and CURTAIN in its method. As is stated elsewhere in a review, Bailey has many "blinds" in her work, to confuse those who's intentions are not pure. A special caution for those who may be WICCANS, or young adolescents looking for love spells, or any kind of "PERSONAL POWER SEEKERS" in general. This is NOT the book for you. Not because the knowledge is too arcane, too advanced or too empowering for those incapable of handling it. This is not some long lost BOOK OF SPELLS, or anything like that. WHITE MAGIC, as Bailey understands it, is the ability to understand the purpose and goal of the Great Masters, and of the Cosmic Christ, and taking a scientific approach to prayer, to materialize the goal on the material plane. I suppose the real magic, is effective prayer. A final note: the difference between WHITE MAGIC, and BLACK MAGIC, is simple, but of utmost importance. The white magician never uses this information for selfish, materialistic reasons, or to obtain sway over the wills of others. If you EVER use magic, hypnosis, drugs, etc, to controll the wills of others, even if your intentions are good, or you think they are, you are practicing BLACK MAGIC. Because FREE WILL, the practice of HARMLESSNESS, and learning to serve the will of THE FATHER IN HEAVEN, (The GREAT WHITE LODGE in SIRIUS) is the real meaning of white magic. I think of much of her work, as esoteric christianity, since she seems to be working in the second ray group, which she has elsewhere indicated to be lead by CHRIST. For those whom this writing is meant for, you will certainly gain some interesting meditation themes, while sensitizing your intuitive buddhic plane. At the very least, you will be exposing yourself to some great stories. "MAY LOVE, LIGHT AND WILL BRING TO EARTH THE PLAN OF GOD."

Summary: "The Gospel According to Peanuts" by Robert L. Short is the book that I remember beginning the long string of books look at popular culture artifacts for their spiritual value. You can find similar volumes on everything from Harry Potter and the Simpson to Tony Soprano and ESPN, so it is not surprising that a volume has come out looking at "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Jana Reiss has a masters of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary to go with a Ph.D. in religion from Columbia University and is the religion book review editor at "Publisher's Weekly." She is also a fan of Buffy, although she also likes Giles and Spike, so it is not surprising that she would decide to pursue the spiritual, religious, and mythological ideas of the television series. For me the pivotal episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in terms of the religious implications was "Amends," the third season episode written and directed by series creator Joss Whedon in which Angel is tormented by apparitions of three of his victims, including Jenny Calendar, which are really manifestations of the First. Just before dawn Buffy finds Angel on a bluff overlooking Sunnydale, waiting for sunrise so that he can die and have peace. Buffy pleads and then lashes out in anger at Angel, but before the sun can rise it starts to snow. The sun will not shine in Sunnydale that day because of the freak snowstorm. Before this episode was over I was pointing out that Whedon had just worked God into the Buffyverse. After all, who else could make it snow besides God? Well, now we know the answer would be the Powers That Be, which are certainly god-like beings, but not the Judeo-Christian creator. Yet given that Buffy usually wears a cross that burns vampires when it comes into contact with them (e.g., "Angel") and that holy water burns vampires too (e.g., "Helpless"), it seems strange to ignore the implications of Christianity for "BtVS." After all, Willow Rosenberg often talks about the fact that she is Jewish, which at least gets you in the theological ballpark. But where Riess wants to make the connection between Buffy and Christianity are the show's elements of apocalypse and sacrifice as well as those of redemption and resurrection. After all, Buffy, the "Savior in a Micro-Mini," has been resurrected twice, in "Prophecy Girl" and "Bargaining, Part I," and that is a hard parallel to ignore. Besides, Riess is also interested in exploring the need for humor in fighting spiritual battles, so this is not a book that is focused on scriptural analysis. Yes, there are Bible verses in this book, but Giles the Watcher is quoted a lot more than the apostle Paul, and you will also get great thoughts from the Buddha, Sophocles, William Shakespeare, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson as well. "What Would Buffy Do?" has three main sections. The first deals with issues of Personal Spirituality and the reader's own spiritual journey: (1) Be a Hero Even When You'd Rather Go to the Mall: The Power of Self-Sacrifice; (2) Changes Make Us Human: Embracing the River of Change; (3) Death is Our Gift: What Death Can Teach Us About Living; (4) "The Anger Gives You Fire": Can Negative Emotions Be Constructive?; and (5) The "Monster Sarcasm Rally": Humor as Power. The lessons here have to do with embracing change as a spiritual teacher and balancing emotions. The second section, Companions on the Journey, expands to look at relationships with families, friends, and mentors: (6) "What Can't We Face If We're Together?": The Power of Friendship; (7) Obey Your Teacher, Except When He's Wrong: Spiritual Mentors on the Path to Maturity"; and (8) The Higher Way: Choosing Forgiveness over Revenge." The final section, Saving the World, looks at the biggest issue of a social engaged spirituality: (9) What Goes Around Comes Around: Consequences; (10) The Monster Inside: Taming the Darkness Within Ourselves; and (11) "Redemption Is Hard": Personal Deliverance in the Buffyverse," which focuses on the fates of Angel, Faith, and Spike. What I like about this book is that it is grounded in analysis of the episodes of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and "Angel" to a lesser extent. When Whedon created Buffy the idea was to flip the stereotype of the blonde girl falling victim to the monster when she walks down the ally, but the subtext of the television version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was the simple reality that "high school is hell." That idea was expanded to include college in particular and life in general, but that fundamental idea becomes the best foundation Riess has for making the case for Buffy's spirituality. In the end her point is that the message of "BtVS" is that although it is great for us to have our own quests and spiritual journeys such things are meaningless unless they are in the service of others. I am not troubled by how Riess tries to speak to the Buffy faithful as well as the neophytes who come late to the party. The back of this volume includes A Guide to Buffy's Seven Seasons, which looks at each season thematically as well as chronologically, and a Buffy Character Guide arranged season by season, which explains the characters rather than just describing them. There is also an interview with Eliza Dushku (Riess interviewed the actresses' mother, Judy Dushku, for her undergraduate thesis many years ago). There have been several academic looks at "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in the last couple of years, from a look at "Slayer Slang" to approaching the series from a philosophical perspective. "What Would Buffy Do?" has the virtue of being one of the more accessible books attempting to find great meaning in the series. The appeal here will be for fans who always knew that Buffy mattered to their lives and can now understanding how its ethics and morality come into play even if you are not out there saving the world (a lot).
